Checklists for your first caravan trip

After the purchase of your new caravan, you will no doubt be desperate to go on holiday and explore the benefits of being a caravan owner. Before you set off on your trip be sure to know the regulations of towing and safety. Checklist for items that you need for your car:

  • Extending wing mirrors - please note that these are compulsory in Spain
  • First aid kit
  • Headlight converters/deflectors - you may need to put these on especially if you are travelling at night
  • Snow chains (for winter caravanning)
  • Spare bulbs
  • Spare keys - best to keep them on you rather than leave in the car
  • Spare wheel/tyre
  • Tool kit including jack
  • Tow rope
  • Warning triangle (2 when towing in Spain and Slovenia)
  • Reflective safety jackets (compulsory in Austria, Belgium, Croatia, France, Hungary, Slovenia, Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Czech Republic) - See Hints & Tips: Safety checklist whilst on holiday

Checklist for items that you need for your caravan:

  • Awning and groundsheet
  • Bucket
  • Caravan toilet chemical and flush liquids
  • Extra long motor caravan water hosepipe
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Fuses
  • Gas bottles
  • Gas regulator (Calor Gas/Campingaz) - Please note that other countries in Europe do not use Calor Gas - See Hints & Tips: Safety checklist whilst on holiday
  • Hitch and/or wheel lock
  • Mains electrics adaptor
  • Mains electrics lead
  • Mains polarity tester - crucial for when travelling abroad
  • Mosquito repellent - very useful on warm sunny evenings
  • Spare bulbs
  • Spare wheel/tyre
  • Spirit level
  • Water containers (waste/fresh)
  • Water hoses (waste/fresh)
  • Bedding
  • Crockery
  • Games to keep you and children entertained
  • Food for fridge and cupboard unless you want to shop when you get to the caravan park
  • Personal belongings

Checklist for items that you need for your documents and papers:

  • Address book with contact telephone numbers
  • Campsite booking confirmation
  • Car/caravan insurance certificates (if you need insurance, visit our touring caravan insurance page for more information or to take out instant cover)
  • Vehicle registration documents
  • MOT certificate
  • Credit cards and any pin codes that you may need to use them - Visa and MasterCard are normally accepted worldwide
  • Currency and travellers cheques if travelling abroad
  • Driving licence for any person likely to drive the car whilst away
  • Travel insurance documents - even if you are travelling in the UK it is advisable to have a separate travel insurance policy
  • European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or certificate if travelling abroad
  • Ferry reference and timetable if applicable
  • Passport if applicable
  • Maps and guides
  • Phrase books/menu dictionary
